Read this passage: "Every evening, Maren climbed the spiral stairs of the lighthouse with a small basket of supplies. She trimmed the wick of the great lamp, polished the brass fittings until they shone, and checked every window for the white crust of dried salt spray. By nightfall, the lamp was ready to send its long beam across the dark water, guiding tired ships home. Maren was not famous, and few ships' captains knew her name.
